New Store Stuff

We have been unpacking and moving things around in the shop and online.  Here are some recent shop photos.  I am completely in love with the big poppy which is a reproduction lab model.  And the old bottles with funky beach finds and porcelain dolls.  I am always happy at how all the new things that we bring in, just fit right in as though they have always belonged.

Rue Mag Issue 3

I read a lot of design magazines, see lots of things I love, and every now and then fall in head over heels with an entire issue like  Issue 3 of Rue Mag.  I know I flicked through the first two issues but I honestly can't remember anything in them, this one I want printed and bound and set in stone so that I can read it over and over again!  It's full of interesting eclectic homes and great photography!   Have I gushed enough yet?  Now I'm going back to look through it again!

A Wise Owl

Love this: Mike Stilkey's "The Owl Is Wary, The Owl is Wise" is an ink-and-acrylic painting on old books.  Part of what looks like a great exhibition titled 'In the Nursery' at the Corey Halford Gallery in LA.  Via LA Times.

The Roses and a Happy Weekend

From Jan 25 to May 31, a delightful 'garden of roses' by Will Ryman is on display on Park Ave in NYC.  I imagine that they are pretty covered in snow right now! I wish you all a great weekend.

Friday's Fabulous Woman: Graca Machel

Graca Machel is one of those woman who has achieved more in her lifetime than most.  Growing up in South Africa, I knew her as the wife of Mozambique's first President.  She is now married to Nelson Mandela.  Beyond being probably the only woman who has married two Presidents, she is a phenomenal talent in her right.

When Time Magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world last year they wrote, “Graça Machel is a born freedom fighter. Long before she became one of the world’s most effective — and joyful — advocates for the rights of children, women and refugees, she was a schoolteacher in Mozambique seeking her country’s liberation from Portugal. In 1975, when it gained independence, she was named Minister for Education and Culture; she also married Samora Machel, who had become Mozambique’s first President. He died in a plane crash 11 years later, and in 1998 she wedded Nelson Mandela...Machel, 64, has a warm smile, a hearty laugh and a way of making everyone feel comfortable. She continues to campaign against pediatric AIDS and the abuse of children and refugees."

Architectural Digest Surprise

This morning I was flicking through some pictures in Architectural Digest quickly as a lot of their stuff is not my thing when one of the bathrooms caught my eye.  I backed up to look at it and did a doubletake as the paintings looked like some of my Mom's and lo and behold they were my Mothers:) Great tub too!

On My Windowsill

I tend to hang on to flowers until they are beyond gone mostly because I love them when they are dry and exposed in a second incarnation.   These beautiful tulips are on my kitchen windowsill.

Cat on a Doorstop

Michelle Caplan just sent me this great photo of her cat taking in the view atop the doorstop she made from one of our remnant packs.

Robert Heidel

I was in a hurry keying in a Google search yesterday and hit a few wrong keys and this is what came up:  the magnificent work of a artist called Robert Heidel.  The movement, light and texture in his work is wonderful.   What a lovely way to start a week!

Downtown

I flew downtown this morning to the California Gift Show.  I love Sundays in LA!  There was so little traffic this morning that I arrived early so I occupied myself with coffee and my camera.  These are some of the shots I took before spending an hour and half going up and down the aisles and heading back to the Valley to open up shop!  I wasn't at the show for very long and only covered one tiny corner but found some great things for the store so mission accomplished!

Friday's Fabulous Woman: Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth DBE (1903-1975) was an English sculptor whose stunning organic abstract forms helped develop modern sculpture.  There is a wonderful bio here, that discusses the evolution of her work.  In 2011, the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery is planned to open in Yorkshire and will contain the gift of a unique collection of over forty working models in plaster and aluminum from the Hepworth Estate.

Color Inspiration: Coffee

Gotta love everything about coffee!  Aah the smell, the taste, the varied nuances of the color in furniture, walls, glass, leather and wood.  It is a perfect neutral that works with any other color.

We are currently adding lots of new items to the shop.   Isn't this vintage cat ring holder great?

Julia Griffiths Jones

Lovely drawings at the National Wool Museum in the UK by Julia Griffiths Jones.  I love how she has recreated the 'threads' of wool in her drawings.

Creating

I'm working on new products for 2011 at the moment so found myself looking at some recent photos of Henry Road stuff.  Here are some of the pictures we took including one of my board.
